The Late Latin word, acedia, or it’s Middle English evolution, accidie, is described as a general apathy or despondency- a spiritual sloth often experienced by clergymen maintaining a solitary lifestyle. This 'noonday' demon could cause confusion of the mind and overtake one’s soul, soaking it in uncertainty, listlessness, and torpor. The experience was viewed as a precursor to one of the seven deadly sins, sloth. In “Accidie”, I explore the concept less as sin and more as a kind of space experienced universally between yearning for change and seeing little insight.
